Working with yearling

Here’s my first session working on leading with one of my client’s yearlings.

I prioritize patience and respecting my space—never being too pushy. I always include some desensitizing in each session; this time, I swung the rope over his head and rubbed it along his sides to help him get comfortable with things touching his back and body. I use plenty of praise and gentle pets whenever he stays calm and relaxed.

Since my client has young kids, I also jumped around a bit to get him used to sudden movements. Next, I asked him to move his feet, ensuring he responds promptly to my cues. When he tried to push past me, I had him move his feet in a circle before stopping calmly by my side again.
